Sin Nombre: Review

The amazing film called Sin Nombre! You know.. I thought this movie would have had a much much bigger impact if Cidade de Deus hadn't come out. It's like there is no other movie about crime gangs can surprise me anymore after Cidade. Still doesn't change the fact that Sin Nombre is oh-so-totally-awesome!

Sin Nombre centres around Sayra and her Honduran family as they try to cross the border into America and a chance encounter with Willy, a former hoodlum being pursued by his old gang. Sayra found her chance of freedom through Willy as Willy finds redemption in helping Sayra try to cross into the U.S.

Sin Nombre was made for approx. $500,000. That's not much money for a film. But the director made Sin Nombre looked like a $10,000,000 movie. The cinematography of the Sin Nombre's gritty Mexican setting is just epicness and the trainride sequences are just stunning.

Paulina Gaitan who plays Sayra isn't that good. Hahaha. I felt she was incredibly stiff and lacking of emotion throughout the whole movie.

Her best scenes in Sin Nombre is when she is with Edgar Florres who plays Willy. I liked Edgar thought. He pretty much carries the whole weight of the film.

Then again, all my praise goes to Kristyan Ferrer who plays Smiley. Awesome portrayal of a child who is struggling to retain what's left of his innocence as he is trust into a world of violence and crime. You don't even get his kind of acting from adult actors, i.e Jessica Alba.

My only complaint for the movie was the score. Because it is an indie movie and it's budget is incredibly thin.. I'm guessing the Sin Nombre producers borrowed the music from other films and just pasted them unto their movie. So it was kind of weird hearing the score of The Fountain and The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford being played in a Mexican film.

It's kinda sad that movies like these won't be seen by much people. But for what it's worth.. I'll definitely go back and watch Sin Nombre again a couple more times.

Precious Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire: Review

Precious....... Based on the Novel "Push"..... by Sapphire. This movie has got to have the longest title I have ever seen. I guess they just wanna take up as much space as they can on the advertisement boards or something. So anyway.. Precious ya'll! I love this movie man. It's the very definition of an underdog movie and I gotta say.. I was trully touched by the story.

So Precious is about Clarice Precious Jones, a 16 year old, illiterate obese black girl, who is living under the poverty line in 1987's Harlem. Her mother and father abuse her physically and sexually, she is still in Junior High School and she is pregnant with her second child by her father. Odds against Precious is so overwhelming but the message the movie sends is that even in hard conditions, something precious and beautiful can still emerge.

Let's talk about the cast first ya'll. Gabourey Sidibe makes an amazing acting debut playing the title role of Precious. Sidibe captures every emotion of pain and helplessness in her performance to the point where I couldn't even bare to watch her cause it's just so depressing.

The biggest surprise in Precious is Mo'Nique who plays Precious' crazy abusive mother. I've seen Mo'Nique's stand-ups and comedies before.. let me tell you something.. Mo'Nique was on drugs when she did Precious. There's no other explanation. She was STUNNING. Totally unrecognizable, like... yeah.. unrecognizable. I never knew Mo'Nique could carry a line that didn't have the words 'motherfucker' or 'my nigger' in it. But she really pulled it off. I hated her character so much but at the end scene with her, yeah.. I admit I did have some symphathy. Mo'Nique totally deserves a Supporting Actress nomination, if theres none better she should win.

And damn Mariah Carey looks hideous in Precious. It's like if you took Mariah Carey's face and beat it for an hour.. that's how she looked like in the movie. But she was awesome in Precious. She didn't have much scenes but the ones she was in were some of the best in the film.

 Jesus Christ......

So let's recap.. horrible actors like Mo'Nique and Mariah Carey gave good performances in Precious? All my praise has gotta go to the director Lee Daniels. I salute you sir. Why Tyler Perry has more money than you I just do not know.

The main draw of Precious is undoubtedly it's phenomenal cast, I'd just hope that the dialogue would be a little bit better but that's easily forgivable. Love the gospel soundtracks in the movie to. So any of ya'll need a nice Pursuit of Happyness-like movie to get you in the Christmas mood and warm up your Juju Bees, ya'll gotta check out this amazing movie.

There's Going To Be a 3D Jesus Movie!

Grizzly Adams Productions are going to make a 3D remaster of “The Fabric of Life,” a docudrama about Jesus Christ.

Using laser technology, a team of Dutch scientists was able to convert two-dimensional photographic negatives of the image on the shroud into an anatomically accurate hologram of the crucified man. The image will be able to be viewed in 3D in the new version of “Fabric,” and is slated for a release in April 2010.

Now I'm not sadistic or a Christian hater (I'm Christian myself) but the crucifixion scene is gonna be awesome! Okay, need to go pray for forgiveness now.

Saw VI: Review

If you don't know what the Saw movies are about, watch this first before you read the review.
Okay so straight up.. I love the Saw series. It's a new genre of psychological horror where the film has a whole lot deeper meaning than just watching torture porn. This isn't just another serial killer series like Friday the 13th where you know people are just gonna die in gruesome ways. Watching the Saw series really makes you think. Cause most of the characters who are being tortured really deserves to be, so one thing I love about Saw is that it examines how far your morality goes when faced with life and death.
That being said, the last few Saw series sucked. The lingering disturbing message is still there but the characters were the problem for me. Saw VI finally restored the series to the status the series once had.
Saw VI continues on the used to be ridiculous series tying up cliffhangers from the last films and centres it around the effed up American insurance industry. The main character is the head of an insurance company that has taken advantage of people what with the economy meltdown and such. He is put through a series of torturous traps in order to save his life and the life of seemingly random strangers, but are actually connected to him and why he is being tortured in some way.
Saw VI ups the gore and the perverse violence to an incredibly sick level this time and the build up to the gory scenes are intense. And it officially has my favourite Saw trap, the carousel trap. Watch it.. so messed up!

The film goes back to the formula of the first Saw at being incredibly unpredictable. Just when you think you know how something is going to play out, it comes back and cleverly makes fun at you for thinking the scene would end that way and subsequently end it with some really really terrible stuff.
Besides Tobin Bell (who has had more flashbacks than Lost) and the insurance guy (who looks exactly like Peter O'Toole) , the acting in Saw VI is horrible. But to be fair, most of the horrible actors were from the 3rd-5th Saw movies, so they are partly the reason why the series has gone down. I liked the whole idea of the insurance guy going through the traps. I really hated him at first but I couldn't help but symphatize for him at the end which was totally, brilliantly  uncalled for.
It's still not as good as the first Saw but it's definitely an improvement from the shitty sequels before it. But please if you can't stand to see gory scenes, don't watch this.
